Beginning with the contract successfully bid on the 5th June 1946, developed the design of aircraft B-52 from a six-cylinder turbo-prop engines, the final prototype YB-52 powered by eight jet engines and wings dramatically. The Stratofortress took its maiden flight in April 1952. Built to carry nuclear deterrence mission period of the Cold War, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36. Although a veteran of a series of wars, the Stratofortress dropped only conventional munitions in combat. The B-52 can carry up to 70.000 pounds (32.000 kg) Stratofortress weapons.Its name is rarely used outside of formal contexts.
The B-52 was on active duty in the USAF since 1955. The bombers flew under the Strategic Air Command (SAC), until it is separated from the state in 1992, and his plane in the Air Combat Command (ACC) is absorbed. This remained the case until February 2010, when all the B-52 Stratofortress and B-2 Spirit, were transferred by air from the ACC to Air Force Command Strike newly established (Global AFGSC). Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs, the B-52 kept in service despite the advent of the plane later, including the Mach-3 North American XB-70 Valkyrie, supersonic speed Rockwell B-1B Lancer and stealthy Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit.
